Hello and welcome!

My name is Maryam Fazl and I'm a Registered Social Worker and psychotherapist.

I'm the founder of Therapy Starts - a clinical practice guiding people to better mental health. I've practiced as a therapist since 2011, and I've had the privilege of supporting clients in both community mental health, and in private practice.

Therapy Starts supports clients in various ways. If you experience any of the following, you're in the right place:

  • You experience stress, anxiety, depression, overwhelm, lack of motivation, or you use avoidance to cope with life problems.

  • It's hard to connect with others, to communicate well, to assert boundaries, to stand up for yourself, to be kind to yourself, to prioritize your own needs, to be more flexible, to live in the moment, to reconcile challenging experiences from the past, etc.

  • You're going through a big life transition: you may be a student, have started a new job, are pregnant or a new parent, have young children, are in life's middle chapter, going through menopause, are an empty nester, retiring,  just became a caregiver or lost a loved one.

Initial Consult

  • This will be the first step to get connected. During the call, we will discuss your situation and how I may be able to support you,  and  I can answer any questions you may have.

  • Contact Therapy Starts for a free 20-minute consult to learn more.

Individual Therapy

  • Assessments:

    • 50 minutes 

    • Help determine the treatment plan and goals.

  • Follow up sessions:

    • 50 minutes​

    • Offered weekly or bi-weekly, or as agreed upon during our assessment

    • Work toward your goals.

Group Therapy

  • Postpartum Group​​

    • Therapy and support group​

  • Menopause Group​​​

    • Therapy and support group​

APPROACH

  • I tailor my approach to individual client needs, drawing from the following therapy modalities:

    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

    • Mindfulness

    • Compassion-focused

    • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

    • Trauma Therapy 

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
